Passing the Journeyman Plumber exam requires more than just reading the code. You need a structured plan that covers every IPC chapter, drills your code-navigation speed under exam conditions, and builds the calculation skills tested in the second scored section — all before test day.

This 30-day checklist is built around the open-book IPC and mirrors the two scored sections administered by PSI for state board: the open-book format: Week 1 covers code administration, materials and joints (Chapters 1–3), Week 2 covers fixtures and water heaters (Chapters 4–5), Week 3 covers water supply, drainage and cleanouts (Chapters 6–7), and Week 4 covers vents, traps and storm drainage (Chapters 9–11) plus full-length exam simulations. The Four-Week Structure

Week 1: IPC Foundations: Code Administration & General Regulations (Ch. 1 & 3)

Register for the exam, get your IPC ready, and master the code hierarchy, permits, inspections, materials and joints.

Register & Review the Official Exam Requirements

  • Confirm your state board eligibility — typically 8,000 hours (4 years) of on-the-job training under a licensed journey-level or master plumber.
  • Register through PSI and schedule your journeyman plumber exam.
  • Note the official format for your state: most PSI states run an open-book IPC exam with a code-navigation section and a calculations section, scored at 70% to pass.

Prepare Your IPC Code Book

  • Buy or borrow the current International Plumbing Code for your state's adoption year (many PSI states use the IPC with state amendments).

Chapter 1: Purpose, Scope & Code Hierarchy

  • Study how the IPC is adopted: model code → state adoption → local amendments → AHJ enforcement.
  • Understand the code official's authority: permits, inspections, right of entry, stop-work orders.
  • Practice finding the scope statement and the sections that list where the code does and does not apply.

Definitions: The Language of the Code

  • Work through the key defined terms: plumbing system, fixture, trap, vent, building drain, building sewer, water supply system, drainage system.
  • Make flashcards — exam questions frequently hinge on the precise definition of building drain vs building sewer, or stack vs branch.
  • Know the difference between a plumbing appliance and a plumbing fixture.

Chapter 3: Materials, Joints & Protection

  • Study the approved material standards (copper, PVC, CPVC, PEX, cast iron) and where each may be used.
  • Learn the joint rules: solvent cement for PVC/CPVC, soldered/brazed for copper, crimp and expansion for PEX, hub-and-spigot for cast iron.
  • Review pipe protection: sleeving through concrete and masonry, fire stopping at rated walls, corrosion protection where dissimilar metals meet.

Week 1 Review & Plumbing Theory Check

  • Re-read your notes on code hierarchy, key definitions, materials and joints.
  • Take the Chapter 1–3 theory quiz on PlumberPractice and score 80%+ before moving on.

Week 2: Plumbing Fixtures & Water Heaters (Ch. 4–5)

Fixture Requirements: Access & Clearance (Ch. 4)

  • Study Section 402 general requirements: fixtures must be durable, smooth, easily cleaned, and connected to an approved water supply and drainage system.
  • Learn the clearance rules: water closet 15 inches from centerline to wall, 21 inches clear in front, 30-inch-wide shower minimum.
  • Review valve and stop requirements at each fixture and the anti-siphon rules for faucets and hose bibbs.

Minimum Number of Fixtures (Table 403.1)

  • Memorize the structure of Table 403.1: occupancy type vs minimum water closets, lavatories, bathtubs/showers and sinks.
  • Practice the 60/40 male/female split for assembly occupancies.
  • Solve 5 problems: given an occupancy and occupant load, find the minimum number of water closets.

Faucets, Fittings & Backflow Prevention

  • Study faucet flow rates and the requirement for ASSE-approved fittings.
  • Learn where backflow protection is required: hose bibbs, laundry connections, and any outlet that can be submerged.
  • Review the types of backflow preventers: atmospheric vacuum breaker, double-check valve, reduced-pressure zone, air gap.

Water Heaters: Location, Access & Clearance (Ch. 5)

  • Study water heater location rules: accessible for service, not in a bathroom (in most adoptions), with required clearances.
  • Learn seismic strapping requirements where applicable and the pan/drain requirements for storage tanks.
  • Review combustion air and venting rules for gas water heaters.

T&P Relief Valve & Discharge (504.6)

  • Understand the T&P valve: set pressure and temperature ratings, installed in the upper portion of the tank.
  • Memorize the discharge pipe rules: no threads on the outlet, pipe terminates 6–24 inches above the floor, no shutoff valve on the discharge, same size as the valve outlet.
  • Practice the classic question: what is wrong with a T&P discharge that is threaded, valved, or hard-piped to the sewer?

Hot Water Supply Temperature Control

  • Study the maximum hot water temperature at public lavatories (usually 110–120°F via ASSE 1017 mixing valves).
  • Review the difference between storage and instantaneous (tankless) systems and their recovery/flow limits.
  • Learn the vacuum relief valve requirement on the cold supply to storage tanks.

Water Supply: Required Pressure & Flow (Ch. 6)

  • Study the minimum pressure and flow requirements for the water distribution system.
  • Learn the maximum velocity rule (8 fps) and where pressure-reducing valves are required.
  • Review the requirement for a main shutoff valve and individual fixture stops.

Estimating Demand: Fixture Units

  • Understand water supply fixture units (WSFU) and how Table 604.3 converts fixtures to demand.
  • Practice the Hunter's curve concept: peak demand vs fixture count is not linear.
  • Solve 5 sizing problems: count the fixtures, total the WSFU, read the demand curve, pick the pipe size.

Water Pipe Sizing (604.3 & Appendix E)

  • Study the two-path sizing method: velocity limit and pressure loss.
  • Learn the friction-loss tables and how pipe length and fittings add equivalent length.

  • Review where shutoff valves are required: at each fixture, at the meter, and at the water heater.
  • Study the backflow protection hierarchy and where each device is mandated (hose bibbs, boilers, irrigation).
  • Learn the thermal expansion requirement: no closed system without an expansion tank or device when a backflow preventer is installed.

Sanitary Drainage: Slope & Sizing (Ch. 7)

  • Memorize Table 704.1 slopes: 1/4 inch per foot for pipes 3 inches and smaller, 1/8 inch for 4 inches and larger.
  • Learn drainage fixture units (DFU) per fixture type and how Table 710.1(2) sizes horizontal branches and stacks.
  • Understand the 1/3 full rule for horizontal drainage flow.

Cleanouts & Changes of Direction

  • Memorize cleanout requirements: within 10 feet of the building sewer connection, every 100 feet on long runs, at the base of every stack, and at changes of direction greater than 45 degrees.
  • Study cleanout access: sized like the pipe up to 4 inches, and the clearance for rodding.
  • Learn the fittings allowed for changes in direction (45s and 1/8 bends preferred; 1/4 bends allowed with cleanouts).

Week 4: Vents, Traps, Storm Drainage & Full Simulations (Ch. 9–11)

Vent sizing and termination, trap seal protection, interceptors, storm drainage, and two full-length practice exams.

The Purpose of Venting (Ch. 9)

  • Study why vents exist: protect trap seals from siphonage, backpressure and evaporation.
  • Learn the vent types: individual vent, common vent, wet vent, circuit vent, stack vent, vent stack, and air admittance valve.
  • Understand the vent connection rule: the vent must connect above the trap weir within the required distance.

  • Learn how vent size depends on the number of fixture units served and the developed length.
  • Practice using the vent sizing table: a 1.25-inch vent serving 8 DFUs — what is the maximum length?

  • Study the storm drainage system: roof drains, leaders/conductors, building storm drain, and disposal options.

  • Study sewage ejector requirements: when fixtures below the sewer level must be pumped, the pit, and the venting of the ejector.

  • Review the Chapter 7 rules for sumps and ejectors in one diagram: pit, pump, discharge, vent, and check valve.

  • Light review day: skim your miss-list and re-tab the sections you hunted for.
  • Re-read the trap seal and vent termination pages — the highest-yield diagrams on the exam.
  • No new material. Sleep well; the open-book exam rewards code navigation speed more than memorization.

Exam Day!

  • Pack your tabbed IPC, your state amendments if allowed, a photo ID, and your PSI confirmation.
  • Arrive early. In the exam: answer the questions you know first, then hunt the code for the rest.
  • Use your tabs: fixture-unit tables, slope tables, cleanout distances and vent sizing are the most-cited references. You've put in the reps — go pass it.

  • 1.Consistency over intensity: Studying 2 hours every day is vastly more effective than cramming 8 hours on weekends.
  • 2.Always study with the code open: Both exam sections are open book — every practice question is also a navigation drill.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 30-day journeyman plumber study checklist really enough to pass?
The 30-day checklist is designed for focused, intensive preparation. It works best for candidates who already have field experience (the Texas license requires 8,000 hours under a Master Plumber) and are comfortable reading the IPC. Which exam does this checklist cover?

Which code book and edition do I need?

How many hours per day should I study?
Most candidates should plan for 2–4 hours of focused study per day.
